Shania cresce in una minuscola cittadina canadese dell'Ontario: quando ha
solo due anni, suo padre abbandona la famiglia, lasciandosi dietro moglie e
figlie. La donna qualche tempo dopo si risposa con Jerry Twain, un indiano della
tribù Ojibway, e da lui ha altri due figli. I genitori incoraggiano Shania a
suonare la chitarra, a comporre e a cantare fin dalla tenera età: per aiutarla
la fanno esibire in locali, ma essendo una bambina deve aspettare l'ora in cui
si smettono di servire alcolici, così spesso la devono svegliare nel cuore
della notte. Canta inoltre anche alle stazioni radio e in alcuni canali
televisivi della zona. Durante l'adolescenza aiuta il padre a piantare alberi nella foresta. Dopo il diploma si trasferisce a Toronto, per inseguire la carriera musicale, ma sfortunatamente, nel novembre del 1987, i genitori rimangono uccisi in un incidente stradale: Shania, che ha 22 anni, torna a casa, mettendo da parte il suo sogno, e si prende la responsabilità di portare avanti la famiglia. Accetta un lavoro come cantante in una riserva a Deerhurst, e coi soldi guadagnati riesce a comprare una casa per lei e i suoi fratelli; rimane lì per tre anni, aspettando che i ragazzi inizino una propria vita. Appena riacquista la sua indipendenza registra una cassetta con alcune demo, e con il suo manager riesce ad organizzare uno showcase, in cui viene notata. Nel giro di poco la Mercury Nashville si fa avanti, facendole firmare un contratto. L'omonimo album di debutto vede la luce nel 1993: ottiene una buona risposta del pubblico in America, anche se quello europeo si dimostra più caloroso. Il video del primo singolo viene visto anche da un noto produttore hard rock, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, che da tempo aveva in progetto di fare qualcosa in ambito country. Quella ragazza canadese attira la sua attenzione, e mentre si trova in Sudafrica, sua terra d'origine, decide di contattare il fanclub di Shania, per sapere come raggiungerla: in tutta risposta riceve una sua foto autografata. Successivamente i due riescono ad incontrarsi a Nashville: inizia tra loro una strettissima collaborazione, che li porta in pochi mesi a sposarsi. Il secondo album di Shania viene prodotto da Mutt, co-autore delle canzoni, e ottiene un enorme successo, scaraventandola ai vertici delle classifiche di tutto il mondo. Nel 1996 The woman in me si aggira intorno ai 12 milioni di copie vendute. L'anno seguente arriva il terzo album: Come on over la tiene due anni in tour, ma alla fine entra di diritto nel Guinness dei primati, sfiorando i 36 milioni di copie. Shania decide di prendersi qualche anno di pausa, ritirandosi con il marito nella loro casa in Svizzera: mentre preparano il nuovo cd diventano per la prima volta genitori, con la nascita di Eja nell'agosto del 2001. Il novembre dell'anno dopo esce Up!, seguito da un altro lunghissimo tour mondiale, uno dei più redditizi della storia della country music e non solo.
